Basics - Grooming Brushes and Combs for Small Dogs

Others: Brush/Combs| Cleaning|Dental |Ears |Extras |Flea Comb|Health|Nails| Puppy|

Here are the basic brushes and combs for small dogs. All can go into your dishwasher
(and periodically should) to keep them clean and sanitized.

Rule of thumb: If your dog has a long coat, the brush you use should have a long pin or bristle.
The shorter the dog's coat, the shorter the bristle or pin.

Small Dog Slicker

Li'l Pals Slicker Purple and Green Brush for Dogs, Extra Small

Perfect size for puppies and Toy breeds. The Ill Pals Slicker is designed to gently remove mats, tangles and loose hair from your dog's coat.

It's the ideal slicker to use on a puppy because it has rubber covers on the metal prongs to protect your little pal's skin.

Chihuahuas, Papillions, Miniature Pinschers, Pomeranians, Toy Poodles, and Yorkshire Terriers would especially benefit from this type of brushing.

Do be careful, however. If used too vigorously any slicker may cause the coat to be prone to static and matting.

Nice ergonomic handle. Under $7

Small Dog Brush

Li'l Pals Bristle Purple and Green Brush for Dogs, Extra Small

Designed for puppies and Toy breeds, this brush will lift loose hair and distribute your dog's natural oils for a soft, shiny coat.

The handle is easy to grip and the size is ideal for small dogs. I throw mine in the dishwasher when it needs cleaning and it's none the worse for wear. Under $6

PETCO Pin & Finishing Dog Brush

Perfect for grooming dogs with sensitive skin and heavy double coats. This brush stimulates skin and distributes healthy natural oils.

The pin side is ideal for daily care while the brush side is great for final smoothing and adding shine. Rounded pins provide extra safety and comfort for your dog.

Pin brushes look like they could easily damage a dog's coat or his skin but in reality, they do little damage to the hairshaft. Pin brushes are one tool that 99% of dog show handlers carry with them to dog shows.

While they don't remove dead hair as quickly or well as a slicker, they do a better job of detangling and separating the coat for easy drying.

Rounded pins for extra comfort. Under $7

Small Dog Comb

Li'l Pals Double-Sided Purple and Green Grooming Comb for Dogs, Extra Small

This comb is designed for puppies and Toy breeds. I like it because it's sturdy and is the right size for my Toy Poodle. The rubber grip is easy to hold and the size is small enough for my hand. Under $7

Below is a six-minute video on how to brush and comb your dog. It's from a groomer and is an excellent overview especially for the novice dog owner.
